Shin Jung Vehicle Registration Office, which is located in Seoul Yangcheongoo, was very lively even though it was early in the morning and dark on the 17th.

The busy employees came into sight in the lobby where I stayed untill 4:30 AM for the news gathering. After 4 AM the building lit up and become all bright. On the 4th floor, in the operation office, people were waking up the train engineers.

The veteran engine driver on the railway Park Hyungnyeol(46.male) with 18 years of experience's wake-up time is 4:50 and he is in charge of a train service at 5:50. Normal people would be in sound sleep before the weekend at this time. Park went to sleep very late after the overtime work but he's eyes were shining.

Park said "I am not tired or disappointed with the fact that I could not really take a rest on the weekend" "I am on this train again in order to serve passengers quickly and safely."

He added "The majority of passengers in the morning are cleaners or security guards who are going for their shifts." "It is worthwhile to serve them on the first train"

[새벽을 여는 사람들] "섭섭하냐고요? 흐뭇합니다"

지난 17일 새벽 서울 양천구 목동로 3길 서울메트로 신정 차량사업소. 칠흑같은 어둠이 드리워진 시각에도 이곳은 활기를 띠고 있었다.

취재 약속 시간인 4시 30분이 되기 전까지 대기한 1층 로비에는 바쁘게 움직이는 직원들의 모습이 눈에 들어왔다. 4시가 넘어서자 1층 로비에 하나둘씩 불이 켜지더니 이내 건물 안이 환해졌다. 4층 운영사업소에서는 기관사를 깨우는 기상 업무가 한창이었다.

5시 55분 외선순환 열차 운행을 맡은 18년 경력의 베테랑 기관사 박형렬씨(46·남)의 기상 시간은 4시 50분. 남들 같으면 휴일을 앞두고 단잠을 자고 있을 시간. 박 씨는 전날 오후 6시 출근해 야근까지 한 뒤 잠자리에 들었지만 눈빛은 흐트러지지 않았다.

박 씨는 "피곤하다거나 휴일에 쉬지 못해 섭섭한 건 없다"며 "오늘도 승객을 신속하고 안전하게 모시기 위한 마음으로 차를 탔다"고 말했다.

박 씨는 "청소하러 가시는 분들, 경비 교대하러 가는 분들이 아침 손님의 대부분"이라며 "그는 분들의 발이 되는 것이 첫 차 운행의 보람이다"고 말했다. 이어 "손님들이 최대한 편안한 승차감으로 목적지를 안전하고 신속하게 도착할 수 있도록 계속해서 노력할 것"이라고 미소지었다. /스피킹전문 EDB 영어회화학원 대표강사 닥터 벤
