[Global Korea]"We are the sentinels of subway"



Subway service normally ends after midnight.

When everybody is going to bed with the silence of the night, there are people who are busy working. The engineers of Seoul metro who check if there is any problem on the train.

Eventhough it was well over the midnight,1 AM on the 22nd, there were still a lot of people working like it was in the middle of the day in Seoul metro's Sinjeong subway Depot. The Sinjeong subway depot which is in Yangcheon-gu office station is departure point and destination of line 2 managing 84 of its trains.

The engineers check if there is any problem with the train. Taking responsibility for safety of the trains from the first train leaves and the last train comes back in is their job.

Because line 2 is a loop line, it is hard on trains. Besides, since there are more passengers using the line compared to other lines, the train breaks down easily.

Thus, the train needs to be checked more carefully. Kim Joong-Cheol(57 M) the head of engineer laughed saying "If you cannot avoid it , enjoy it. There are more amusing moments when I am working".

"우리는 지하철의 파수꾼"

지하철은 보통 자정이 넘으면 운행이 끝난다. 밤의 침묵과 함께 모두가 잠드는 그때, 남들보다 더 바쁘게 일하는 사람들이 있다. 운행을 끝낸 지하철 차량의 이상 유무를 점검하는 '지하철의 파수꾼', 바로 서울메트로 검수부 직원들이다.

지난 22일 새벽 1시 반 무렵 찾은 서울메트로의 신정차량기지. 자정을 훌쩍 넘긴 시간이었지만 마치 한낮처럼 많은 이들이 분주하게 오가며 일하고 있었다. 지하철 2호선 양천구청역에 위치한 신정차량기지는 2호선 차량 중 84대를 관리하고 있는 지하철의 출발점이자 종착점이다.

검수부는 차량에 이상이 없는지를 살피는 일을 맡고 있다. 막차가 들어오고 첫차가 나갈 때까지 지하철의 안전을 책임지는 일이 바로 검수부의 역할이다.

지하철 2호선은 순환선이라 지하철에 무리가 많이 가는 편이다. 또한 다른 노선에 비해 탑승객도 월등히 많아서 고장이 잦다. 그만큼 더 꼼꼼하고 열심히 차량을 검수해야 한다.

김중철(57·남) 부검수장은 "피할 수 없으면 즐겨야 한다. 일하면서 즐거운 순간이 더 많다"며 웃었다. 그는 "일이 힘들어서 그만두고 싶다고 생각한 적은 없다"며 "즐겁게 일하자는 마인드로 서로 즐겁게 일하고 있다"고 현장의 분위기를 전했다../스피킹전문 EDB 영어회화학원 대표강사 닥터 벤
